Expos baseball great Gary Carter dead at 57
|
|
1967 was a magical year for many of us, as we celebrated Canada's centennial year. Many of us "older"
folks have memories that would fill pages.
In the sporting world, Canada's first major league baseball team, the Montreal Expos, was created and one of the many leading
lights of that team was Gary
Carter. Nicknamed "Kid" for his youthful exuberance, Carter was named an All-Star
11 times, and was a member of one World Series championship team.
He passed away this week and we mention him here because a lot of us not only remember him and the Expos, but we
remember driving down old Highway 17 to visit Expo '67, then for years after taking the same route to watch the Expos play
at the old Jarry
Park Stadium in Montreal.
(In those days, when I lived in Overbrook, now part of Ottawa near the Vanier Parkway, the Queensway ended long
before Orleans, which was a smaller town then. The highway travelled through St. Joseph's Boulevard and on Laurier
Street, in Rockland)
(Visit a photo collection about Canada's
Centennial Celebration!)

Long John Index Service

How the Long John Index Works
The Long John Index is a 'not-scientific-whatsoever' method of measuring when, and if, one should be wearing a
pair of thermal long underwear, known more commonly in the Dominion of Canada as 'Long Johns”. The Long John Index
originated in the Arctic Capital of Edmonton Alberta, in the second decade of the 21rst Century. It is used mainly
for edutainment and gambling purposes.
The Index runs on a scale from 1 to 5; 1 being the lowest, and 5 being the highest. The Index corresponds to weather
conditions, including air temperature as well as that Wind Chill, which was invented so people can brag about living
through -68 degrees, even though it was really only -31 degrees. The Higher the number ( or rating if you will
) the more your very survival depends on wearing a pair of Long Johns.

| (CR/BJ/FH, May 27/28, 2011) Refuse and recycling pick-up was one day later last week due to the
long weekend and over one dozen households in our quarter put their materials out one day too early on the Friday.
(Obviously they do not visit the Canaan Connexion

for their garbage are being hit by marauding squadrons of crows. These were just some of the attacks recorded by

(Canaan Road, May 2011) Please note that because of the wet spring we have been unable to hold
our annual Canaan Road Clean-up. Even as the month of June arrived, there was still too much water lying in the
ditches making it not only unsafe for our families, but almost impossible to pull the refuse out from under. We
will hold our clean-up later in the fall and are counting on the generosity of our community members to participate.
Keep watching for an update.
(The clean-up is followed by a beverage and pizza party held at the Canaan Blueberry Farm.)

More crow attacks recorded in the Canaan quartier
(Canaan Quartier - Ongoing) The Alta Vista (Coronation Park) area of Ottawa is not the only place
that is being invaded by crows. Thankfully we are not getting the many thousands that Ottawa has (click here), but the few that do descend on our local
neighbourhoods are a nuisance neverthless.
Besides waking us up in the early mornings with their constant cawing, the crows (and occasional
raven) are playing havoc with our garbage, especially with the plastic bags that people are putting out early,
without putting them in secure containers with tight lids.
And it seems that some households never learn. In our quartier the same people are being hit
week after week. Read more...
