VERGLAS/ICE STORM
When the 1998 ice storm descended, it provided a focused period for me to explore the concepts of life, death, devastation and beauty. A series of 40 oil paintings was created in concert with the storm and its aftermath. I also recorded the sounds of the ice on the trees and in 1998 a Corel Endowment Fund for the Arts Grant allowed me to digitally master the audio portion of Verglas / Ice Storm. In December and January of 2000 and 2001, a selection of these paintings without the audio component was exhibited at the new Ottawa city hall.

SUITE FOR A HILL
The subject of this painting is a walk up a hill starting in the late Fall. We spiral up the hill through the winter months and with Spring the wall of rock and juniper falls away. We reach the top and look out over the land in the four directions into Summer. The painting is composed of 36 panels, the overall dimension being 5' high by 78' long. The panels are completely moveable. They were painted three at a time: each of the 12 triptychs represents the hill on a particular day. Each triptych is 5' high by 61/2' wide.
