We've had our little Shih Tzu, Maggie, now for just over a year.
And what a
blessing she has been to our little family! Oh, she was so shy
when we adopted her! It was made clear to us that she would take
some time to come out of her shell and that there may be need for some
extra help with her as she had been rescued from a puppy mill.
So tiny and so shy she was but it was the look in her eyes that made
us fall in love with her. We couldn't help but not take her
home. We were going to love away all the hurt out of her life.
We fully expected to have to potty train and basically start anew with
Maggie but to our delightful surprise, not only was she potty trained
like a pro, she also came out of her shell within a couple of days!
We could already see her personality peek through the shyness on the
way home from the SPCA when we found out she loves car rides!
Every day, she would show more and more of herself and relax and ease
into her new surroundings. By the third week, Maggie was running
around the house with her tail held up high and waving around happily.
I think the last little bit of shy Maggie was shed the day of her
first grooming that summer. Oh how happy and proud she was,
prancing around and giving kisses every time she could!
She loves to chase toys around, run around the house after us and take
naps in the sun. She's even learned tricks for a modest price of
one little treat. I think the cutest thing about Maggie is that
she barks in her sleep. She almost never barks otherwise.
Maggie's
also made many friends in our neighborhood. She gets visits from
the family too. It's been made clear that they visit to see her
more than us. I guess it's a testament to how precious she is.
We've been on road trips with her, we've had a doggy Christmas party
with her and countless beautiful walks by the Rideau Canal with her.
We celebrated Maggie's first year with us on April 21st and honestly,
we couldn't have asked for a better doggie than her. So sweet
and loving, happy, funny, quiet and never makes a mess and doles out
kisses like they're going out of style. What else could you ask
for?
