I had
been checking the local dog shelters and petfinder.com in the Ottawa
area on occasion, but I wasn't sure if I was ready to adopt a pet.
I was looking for the perfect dog. I knew I didn't want a puppy,
or a purebred, and I was hoping for a dog that was good with children.
One Saturday night, I was searching petfinder.com and I came upon a
dog that I really liked at a shelter in Almonte. The write-up
was perfect! A one year old golden retriever/lab mix that had lived
with children. I immediately sent an e-mail to the shelter, and
checked the hours of operation for Sunday. I printed the ad from
petfinder.com and went to bed, very hopeful. The next morning I
got up early and went straight to my computer. I had an e-mail
from the shelter; it said that the dog I wanted to see had been
adopted, and they referred me to their updated website. A bit
disappointed, I went back to petfinder.com and did my search again.
This time, I found a lab/shepherd mix that looked interesting, this
time at a shelter in Quebec. For some reason, I had not been to
this shelter, and so I thought maybe I should go check it out.
As
soon as I entered the SPCA in Aylmer, I was impressed with it
and
the
relaxed atmosphere. I thought it was wonderful to be able to
walk through the kennel area where all the dogs are. When I
got to
the lab/shepherd mix, I realized he was not the dog for me, so I
started to look around at the others. I saw a few possibilities
until one caught my eye. A golden retriever/lab mix that looked
really close to the one from Almonte. With no time spared, I
enquired about the dog ....... and guess what? He had been
transferred from a shelter in Almonte about a week earlier. I
adopted him ....... his name is Molson and he is the most wonderful
dog. He is excellent with
children and can usually be seen walking off leash in the dog parks of
Ottawa.
Hope
you enjoyed my story. Molson truly is a special dog .......
because of
him, we were part of a dog rescue on Hwy 401. Three dogs (yellow
lab, black lab and a beagle) had crossed three lanes of traffic and
were stuck along the median. An off duty female paramedic had
stopped, but was without her cell phone and was jumping up and down to
get attention. I stopped (something I don't normally do as a female),
we managed to get the dogs in her car and to a nearby fire station.
I had everything in my car ...... dog treats, food and leashes.
