Mowgli

Sept. 10th update (Mowgli has been with us for 7 days):

My husband and I drove to the SPCA of Western Quebec to look at a puppy.  When we got there the puppy had already been adopted - that day!  But it was meant to be because we met Moogley that day (we spell his name Mowgli now). You may think I'm crazy but I just knew when I saw him that he was meant to be our dog.  I am so glad we were able to adopt him a week later (we drove 3 hours to get him!).

We adopted Mowgli on Friday September 3rd.  It has been a week since he has been home with us and we are so happy with him and proud of him.  He is eager to please and has bonded to us already.  He loves his belly scratched
and just laying in the same room near us.  We have made it a point to spend a lot of time with him and he sure appreciates it!  Mowgli has a very special place in our heart already.  Thank you for taking good care of our new dog while he was in your shelter!

December 17, 2010 update (Mowgli has been with us for 3 months):

Looking back I am so glad we adopted an adult dog.  Mowgli has been perfect for us as first-time dog owners.  He came housetrained, basic obedience trained, walks well on a leash, and has great recall.  We take him to a field across from us to run around – he loves it and he always makes sure he can see us!

Mowgli is perfect for our cats (who are a bit skittish because we rescued them as feral kittens).  He is so gentle!  The cats don’t fear him one bit.

Mowgli’s temperament is totally a Lab – he loves to lie on the floor in whatever room we are in.  He LOVES people.  Sometimes we see Husky in him (his curly tail, he licks his paws), and other times we also see border collie (his stance sometimes and his ability to JUMP! he never jumps on us but outside we can get him jumping).  Yet, for having all of these active breeds in him somewhere – he is the calmest dog!  He is also so quiet – rarely ever barks!  He has no prey drive – squirrels run by him and he does not blink an eye.  He is a wonderful mixed breed!

Mowgli is not perfect – he gets extremely anxious/excited when we bring him to a new house.  He whines a lot then settles down.  I think he was never brought to new places until now (maybe under-socialized as a pup?).  I also think someone was heavy-handed with him in his past.  For example, last week my husband was out in the shed and he lifted up a hammer and Mowgli saw it and ran and cowered for no reason.  It's sad to see him think that we may hit him, but he rarely acts like this, and he is in his forever home now.

I told my husband last week that I would not trade Mowgli for a million dollars.  And 3 months ago I would have said that I was NOT a dog lover!  Mowgli has made me one.  I totally recommend adopting an adult dog from a shelter or rescue.  Thanks for all your good work at the SPCA of Western Quebec.
