Jean-Philippe Vinette is a
young man on a mission. This environmental advocate (he was chairman of l'École secondaire catholique L'Escale
environmental committee and is a member of the Clarence-Rockland Environmental Society) has been dreaming
about building a green roof on top of the Clarence-Rockland Public Library for around three years.
He explains how the idea came to him: "I was at the dentist and I was flipping through various
magazines in the waiting room and I came across an article of green roofs. I found it very interesting, especially
since the complex (Recreation Complex) was in the process of being built. Once construction is complete, we identified
a perfect place to do it, "he says.
As far back as January 2010, Jean-Philippe's dream was featured in a story in L'Express: "A green initiative in Rockland". This French item can
be found here.
His idea was also recognized in an April 2010 story in Le Droit newspaper. The English title to the French story reads: "A young man with bright ideas". You
can read it by clicking here.
Now the dream is closer to reality. In may of this year, the TD Foundation for Friends of the
Environment presented a check for $ 10,000 to support the project. You can read about the presentation and view
a photo of Jean-Philippe accepting the cheque. Click here.
The green roof will be built on the lower level of the
Clarence-Rockland Public Library seen in the middle of the picture.
Now
the man with the mission, on behalf of the Clarence-Rockland Environmental Society is offering a Community Awareness
Workshop on green roofs. It will be held at L'Escale High School.As the school will be closed, entry to the presentations (in
French and English) is at the rear entrance to L'Escale High School (enter via the Optimist Performance Hall).
The evening will be divided into two parts, a French presentation at 7:00 p.m. and an English presentation at 8:30 p.m.
Included in the topics will be:
- the history of green roofs;
- the types of plantation;
- the advantages; and,
- how to go about it
- Jean-Philippe will have samples of the membranes needed.
There is no charge for this event and everyone is welcome.
