How do the City Council
Meetings work?
|
|
Normally there are three meetings which are
held in the first full two weeks of the month. They are the first Monday and the first Wednesday, then again on the second Monday of every month. They start at 7:15 p.m. and are held in Rockland
in the council chambers located in the annex behind City Hall on Laurier Street. Every session includes a question
period reserved for citizens and anyone wishing to address council is welcome to do so.
1. On the first Monday, the Committee
of the Whole is in session. Typically this is where all of the City's directors present
their monthly reports. These include: Community Services; Planning Department; Infrastructure and Buildings; Protection
to Person and Property (Fire Department); Protection to Person and Property (By-law Department); and Administration.
It is at this meeting that members of council should ask their questions and give the directors any instructions
(ie. give them time to prepare answers to council questions, gather further information for a future meetings,
etc.)
2. The Wednesday meeting is considered to be the "Public Meeting" where council deals with zoning and by-law matters (changes
to zoning, amendments to by-laws, site plan control, planning matters, naming streets or parks, etc.). Any decisions
to be made are reserved for the following meeting.
3. The Regular Council Meeting is on the second Monday of every
month.
Extraordinary sessions may be conducted if the need arises.
If you plan on attending a council meeting, you can view (and copy) the agenda on the City of Clarence-Rockland
web site. Click here.
This page also has links to documents, forms, meeting minutes, by-laws and newsletters. The information suggests
that these items are located on the Clarence-Rockland iHost site, however the Canaan
Connexion has found that many of these links either do not work, or they are out of date.
