Citizen Alert:
Beware of the "Mystery Shopper Scam" 2012
Rockland resident contacted |
(Rockland,
March 22, 2012) The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have been investigating numerous fraudulent cheques that have
been connected to a "Secret Shopper" scam that stretches across Canada.
Victims across the country have been receiving cheques for amounts in excess of $4000. They have been offered employment
to evaluate money transfer services if they cash the cheque, send in most of the money to a given address, then
keep a few hundred dollars for their efforts.

| Canaan Connexion meets Lovebird Connections |
|
(Rockland, Saturday, March 17, 2012) You never know when you are going to find an interesting story.
Just as I was about to leave the parking lot of a large pizza franchise, I spotted a young couple
distributing business cards under the windshield wipers of the many parked cars, the owners watching their Ottawa
Senators getting whipped by the Toronto Maple Leafs, three zip (Yeah! said this Leaf fan... but that's yet another
story).
She was handling the cards, he was driving the
car up and down the rows. I motioned her to come over to my vehicle so I could see what it was all about.
Judy and Gerry Champagne, with two-month-old Charles asleep in the back car seat, were taking
advantage of the busy St. Patrick's Day crowds, to promote their fledgling business, Lovebird Connections.
The Plantagenet couple have just started an online dating service, the first of its kind in Prescott-Russell.
The home page says:
"Whether you are looking for simply a friend, dating, a long term relationship or a casual
encounter you have come to the right place to find just that. What are you waiting for, join today and let your
relationship take flight!"
The idea isn't what I found interesting, it was the way Julie and Gerry, themselves hooked up.

South Nation Conservation
issues spring water warnings
(March
9, 2012) Under the heading of WATERSHED CONDITIONS, the South Nation Conservation authority has issued a Water
Safety Statement, advising that water levels and flows throughout the South Nation River watershed have
significantly increased.
Their warning: Residents are advised to stay away
from rivers as river flows are strong, river banks are slippery, and ice cover is weak. Parents are encouraged
to explain these dangers to their children. Read the advisory here.
SNC encourages the public to visit their Watershed Conditions webpage at
http://watershedconditions.com and to also provide feedback with respect to changes
in water related conditions in their local areas (i.e. high water elevations, road
inundation, ice break-up, etc.). All feedback can be sent to waterwatch@nation.on.ca.
For additional information, please contact SNC at 1-877-984-2948.
Besides the obvious (rivers, lakes and large ponds) residents should also be mindful of overflowing
ditches and creeks in the area. They all constitute a potential danger.

C-R Council
Wednesday's meeting - the quietest on record?
(Rockland, Wednesday, March 7, 2012)With three council
members missing, one short "In-Camera", two short presentations, one person in the audience and one media
person, this meeting had to be the least controversial, least contencious and quietest on record... at least for
the "new" council. (We are putting together the evening in words and pictures so please come back later...
- pwm, Ed.)
FYI: The third
in the series of monthly meetings is scheduled for Monday, March 12 with a 7:15 p.m. start.
The tentative agenda, along with proposed resolutions, is now available on the City's
website.
We must be coming up to St. Patrick's Day...

Mike Hudon - Rockland
Missing following plunge in Ottawa River
NOTE: Read the latest update: "Search suspended". |
(Clarence Island, Friday, February 24, 2012) 50-year-old Rockland resident Mike Hudon is missing and presumed
drowned after the ATV he and friends were riding broke through the ice on the Ottaw a River, near Clarence Island.
A steady stream of condolences from friends and residents have been added to his Facebook page since the tragedy
was reported through local news media.
(See our Reader Comments...)
(CAUTION: Police and fire services cannot stress
enough the dangers of going on the ice on local rivers and lakes, because of the wide temperature swings at this
time of the year. C-R District Chief Luc Chayer says that the people who think they know the river well are likely
the ones who put themselves in the most danger.)
