Marion Roberts Wins 6 Medals at Huntsman World Senior Games

It’s an old axiom; work hard and you’ll be rewarded. That was true for Marion Roberts of Vernon, BC who took home 3 Silver and 3 Bronze medals in the Swimming competition at the Huntsman World Senior Games on October 8, 2010.

“ It was great to share the experiences with competitors from around the world and pleased to win medals in races against such strong, enthusiastic and generous athletes. Thank you St. George for such a warm, friendly welcome”, Roberts said.

The Huntsman World Senior Games is a world-class, Olympic-format, international sporting event for athletes ages 50 years and older. Founded more than 24 years ago, the Games currently hosts over 10,000 athletes annually. Each October, for two weeks, the event is held in colorful St. George, Utah, less than a two-hour drive from Las Vegas, Nevada. At the 2010 Games, athletes will compete in 27 different sports and will host participants from all 50 of the United States and over 25 foreign countries.

One of the things that makes this event so unique is that it is more than just a collection of sporting events,” says Kyle Case, Huntsman World Senior Games CEO. “The Games is a total experience, so much more than just another sports competition.”

The participants enjoy the Parade of Athletes, Opening Ceremonies, Concert and Celebration, Social Events, Banquets and Free Health Screenings, to name only a few of the additional activities that enhance the athletic experience. The Huntsman World Senior Games is truly a celebration of life after 50!

“We’d like to invite athletes of all skill levels, from the elite to the novice, to experience this amazing event,” says Case. “Once you experience the Games, we know you’ll have a great time and we’ll be seeing you for years to come.”

15th Annual Ad Astra Stone Dedication Ceremony

Patricia and Bob Johnson along with Karen and John Wilson joined John R. Smith and his family at this year’s Ad Astra ceremony.  As posted on June 28, W/O John R. Smith and Joseph were flight training partners with the RCAF in London, Ontario in 1943.  John’s family dedicated an Ad Astra stone to their father.  John and Joseph’s stones are side by side at the 424th Squadron Memorial.

With permission, I am posting the following email received on June 22nd from Alan Smith. Patricia and Alan have been in contact and will be meeting later this summer. Thank you Alan for taking the time to write to our family.

Hello,

Could you please pass on to Patricia Rochford Johnson our condolences for the loss of her brother Joseph and our thanks for the Ad Astra Ceremony given in her brother's memory.  My father W/O John R. Smith was very happy to see this done for his old friend.  John Smith and Joseph were flight training partners with the RCAF in London, Ontario in 1943.  He always talked highly of Joe throughout the many years since the war.  He told of how they shared  navigation duties as a team on their training flights.  He  talked of how these two young guys never really thought that they wouldn't return home.  He was very saddened when he heard that Joseph and his crew went down so close to the end of the war.  My dad was very happy to read that his sister had the memorial stone placed for her brother and I read to him the story she had written.  I thought you might like to know that this gesture on your part means so much to my father, one of the many vets who lost friends in battle.

Sincerely,

Alan J. Smith

Excerpts from the Fredericton Daily Gleaner article, June 20, 2010.

The Fredericton Picaroons Reds scored two second-half goals to lift the Reds to a 3-2 victory over Dieppe FC in New Brunswick Senior A Men’s Soccer League action Saturday evening at Chapman Field.”

Grant, subbing in for regular goaltender Matt Lally who's in South Africa watching the World Cup, shook off the shaky first goal to earn the win and the confidence of his teammates.”

The 17-year-old, who is the regular keeper for the New Brunswick U-18 provincial team, practised with the senior squad Thursday night and was thrown into the fire, as it were, against the only other unbeaten squad in the league.”

"I was nervous," admitted the Grade 11 student at Leo Hayes High School. "I was just proud to get to be on for the win. It's a lot different "¦ it's a lot faster than I'm used to. But it's good because, two years from now, when I'm playing university ball, it will help me a lot. Me being underage and all, getting that win makes me feel good about myself."

The team is headed to Mississauga, Ont., where they'll compete in the Umbro Showcase Tournament, which features the best age-group teams in the country  According to coach George Lucas, the team has achieved great unity in a short period of time. Brenda (Roberts) Cadman, granddaughter of George (2) was a volunteer at the alpine skiing course.

Her grandson Michael Gordon Cadman was the forerunner for both the male and female downhill races.

For his forerunning and related skiing services for the men's and women's skiers Michael was assigned a hillside condo, giving him easy access to the hills, but also the opportunity to wander into whistler Village at night - pretty neat for a sixteen year old!
