April & July 2011 Pat and Bob Johnson
This year 2011 has been a rather momentous year in my life. On April 28th, my husband Bob and I, Patricia celebrated our 60th Wedding Anniversary.
On July 2nd, we fulfilled an ambition we had planned for approximately two years and completed a flight on the Lancaster Bomber out of Mount Hope. This was our tribute to my brother Joseph, who was a Navigator on a Lancaster and lost his life returning from a bombing mission over Germany on April 5th, 1945.
We took off at 10.55 A.M. and flew over our house on Woodworth Drive in Ancaster where our neighbours Judie and Graham Hamilton had laid a blue tarpaulin with the Canadian flag in the center of our driveway as a marker for the Pilot and waved as we flew by.
We headed to Toronto and flew around the CN Tower and passed over the Island Airport, so low, we thought we were about to land. From there we headed to Niagara Falls, a beautiful sight and back to Hamilton.
As I have a balance problem, I was content to sit by my narrow window and watch the sights as Bob was back and forth to the cockpit taking pictures. When we landed, I made my way over the three bumps in the plane to the cockpit and sat in my brother Joseph’s station and had my picture taken.
On debarking the plane a picture was taken of the 4 crew and 4 passengers. A beautiful day, wonderful scenery and a trip I would not have missed. It was a unique experience, uncomfortable, extremely noisy, but now I have a better understanding of what my brother and his crew went through. We could not have asked for a nicer crew, they went out of their way to please.
