Rachelle
Halpenny
Obituary Notices: New feature on our website
Starting next week, the Canaan Connexion will be printing the names from local obituary notices. This will be a weekly feature appearing once
a week on weekends. However if we see the notice in time, we will print it asap in the event that someone wants
to attend the visitations or services. Here are samples found on the Brunet Funeral Home website:
- M. André Chrétien - 2 février 2012
- Mme Hélène Chatelain - 1er février 2012
- Mme Viola Boileau - 31 janivier 2012
- M. Bernard Greffe - 27 janvier 2012
- M. Raymond Boyer - 20 janvier 2012
Too often we miss these announcements and often times miss the opportunity to offer condolences
to families, friends or colleagues. And as it happens we learn so much more about a person after they have passed
away.
A example was the recent demise of local resident of note, Rachelle Halpenny. Rachelle
was disabled and you would often see her around Rockland in her wheelchair, accompanied by her faithful Black Lab.
She never considered herself as being disabled. She once said: "I'm not really disabled.
What I can't do is not what I want to do ."
Rachelle was a strong advocat for persons with disabilities and was probably singularly responsible
for having an accessible bus added to the C-R Transit fleet.
What you may not have known is that Rachelle was a paraolympian in her younger days and won many
medals representing Canada. She began competing in disabled sports in 1976 and her achievements were incredible.
Her specialties were rifle shooting, table tennis, swimming, archery, and track and field; she won medals (mostly
gold) in all of these events.
You can read two interesting stories on Rachelle's achievments, here, and here and we will add more information later. In the meantime,
here is a link to our obituary page...

Forest Hill has a fairly active Facebook page
but more community members should participate
(Forest
Hill, Friday, January 20, 2012) The residential community of Forest Hill is located between Canaan and Joanisse
Roads and is about five clicks south of Highway 174, on Canaan Road. It was build in the early 1990s by the now
defunct Tempra Homes.
About two years ago two of its residents started a Facebook page to keep the locals advised of happenings
and events in their neighbourhood of about 260 homes.

Recharged Chamber of Commerce scores in new arena
(Rockland, January 18, 2012) The New Clarence-Rockland Chamber of Commerce was
inagurated with a line up of special guests and an enthusiastic crowd of close to100 people on the upper deck of
the Canadian International Hockey Academy arena last evening. Revitalized by a new board, led by Paul Paradis,

Wikipedia protests SOPA with blackout
(Wednesday, January 18, 2012) Two
Internet resources that this community news service uses many times a day, are Google and Wikipedia. These resources are invaluable not only to
journalists, but to all Internet users.
On Wednesday, several big name Internet sites, lead by the giant Wikipedia. shut their services down to protest against
proposed legislation in the United States—the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives,
and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate. View 10 awesome SOPA blackouts here.
It would appear that the maneuver had some effect because as one news service put it: "US
lawmakers appear to be abandoning their support for controversial copyright legislation after one of the biggest
online protests in history." Read more related to this story...

Update:
Phone scammers taget local PC users by telephone
(Since we ran this story last week, the local
mainstream press have picked up the story! Follow to second page...)
(Clarence-Rockland, January 12, 2012) We have to thank our friends at Compufix (Jeff, Ray and Bobby Luttmer) for alerting us
to this information. Many people in the 613-833- and 613-446- telephone exchanges (Cumberland/Rockland) are being
called by fraudsters purporting to be a “tech support speciali st” from Microsoft. They are telling people that their computers
are coming up with error messages and may be infected with a virus. They then ask the "customer" to log
on to a website that will help them to eliminate the virus. Read more... |
