The Dale's Cemetery Annual Memorial Service
has been going for at least 50 years |
(Cumberland Village - June 10, 2018) Every year, during the
warm weather, many of the small communities in our area (Navan,
Bearbrooke, etc.) celebrate annual memorial services in their
cemeteries to honour the many souls who are lying in their final
resting place. Cumberland Village is no exception. The Dale's Cemetery
Memorial Service has been going for over 50 years, according to local
historian Jeannie Smith.
In years past, area resident Reverend Ernie
Cox, now retired from the First Avenue Baptist Church, has been
conducting the Dale's Memorial and has been doing so for some 25 years.
This year, Reverend Robert Merritt, Minister at
Cumberland's St. Andrew's United Church will be officiating. He says
the Service will be held "rain or shine". In the event of rain the
service will be held in the church at the Cumberland Museum.
You are asked to bring your lawn chairs and participate in
the hymns and readings. "Special music" will be provided. The address
is: 2960 Old Montreal Road.
The cemetery was started in 1836 on farmland
purchased from the Dale family. There are a number of historical
figures buried here, not to mention many of the old and well-known
families from the area. (Click on pic to

Dale's Cemetery (reference book) by:
Cumberland Township Historical Society
An
excellent reference for those interested in Dale’s Cemetery in
Cumberland Village. “The land for this beautifully situated and well
groomed cemetery was given by William Dale. It lies south of Old
Montreal Road, about ¾ mile east of the Village of Cumberland, and
comprises 7.6 acres in the north-easterly part of Lot 11, Concession 1
of the old Township of Cumberland. We know nothing of William Dale
except that the 1879 Atlas states “William Dale, a retired farmer was
born in Ireland in 1805, came to Canada in 1828, and owns 200 acres Lot
11 Conc. 1” having been buried in this cemetery. Early records show
this cemetery was started in 1836 on farm land purchased for 20 pounds
currency from Wm. Dale and his wife Mary Lough Dale who were buried
here in 1895 and 1855 respectively.” (Darell Small, Ottawa Branch
Ontario Genealogical Society, 1980). Published by the Society in 2005.

Carine
Wilson
Canada's first female senator is buried here
Canada's first woman senator, was born in 1885 at Montreal
Quebec, the daughter of Senator Robert Mackay and Jane Baptist. She
died in Ottawa March 3, 1962. Carine Ray Wilson was appointed in 1930
by Mackenzie King. She was President of the National Federation of
Liberal Women 1938-48, the League of Nations Society 1938-42, and was
Canada's first delegate to the United Nations in 1949.
Many believe that she lived in what is now
known as Cumberland Village, in the old
stone house on the main drag, Old Montreal Road. (Research showed that
this was incorrect. She actually lived in Rockland.)
You can read more about Carine Wilson and check
out a number of references that we have put together by visiting our
Clarence-Rockland "Museum" page. Click here.

A
murderer lies in an unmarked grave
Perhaps unknown to anyone except to older residents of the
area or those acquainted with local history, there is an unmarked grave
located in Dale's Cemetery. It has no headstone, no plaque, nothing to
show that it even exists. To look at it today you could not distinguish
from the earth and trees that cover it.
But it is the earthly home of a murderer who
some 70 years ago shot and killed a Rockland OPP officer by the name of
Harold Dent. The story in photos and bits of print can be read on the
Internet. Click on the pictures to start, then follow the links, or do
a Google search for "Harold Dent".
