Children of the Motherland:

A unique event on Saturday at the Optimist Performance Hall:
Children of the Motherland:
Dance Through Cultures and all Talents
by Patrick Meikle

(Rockland, March 29, 2012) Children of the Motherland is presenting Dance Through Cultures And All Talents, a musical and dance extraveganza this coming Saturday, March 31, at the Optimist Performance Hall which is located at 1525 du Parc Avenue, behind the YMCA/L'Escale complex.

Children of the Motherland a non-profit organization, co-founded by Rockland resident Goretti Fukamusenge. Its focus is to help children in need, whether in Canada or abroad. This performance is a fundraising event for children in refugee camps in Burundi. Part of the money raised will be donated to the local food bank.

Goretti (named after the saint) is originally from Burundi and is a practising lawyer in Ottawa. She recently visited a refugee camp in Burundi and "saw the need" to help the children. She has been a Rockland resident for three years.

If you click on the poster on the right, you will see that three groups are featured. They are: Abezamutima, and Madame Omely-Vietnam.

ABEZAMUTIMA is a Burundian Traditional Dance Group based in Ottawa. It is an organization made of experienced dancers, drawn together by their common interest and passion for traditional dancing. The group has young performers (4 years old to 12), and adults’ performers (13 years and over). It was established by a group of highly experienced Burundian folk and traditional dancers. Through its artistic endeavors, the group hopes to share its heritage with communities and promote cultural diversity in the National Capital Region.
