Canaan Blueberries - (613) 833-2069

(Saturday, August 16, 2014) A tough year for blueberries but a good year for honey:
Blueberries: The Canaan Blueberry Farm is now closed for the 2014 season. It was not a great year for blueberries as there was up to a 70 per cent loss of crop due to winter kill. Looking ahead to 2015, you can start calling the farm around mid-July to find out when they will be opening for the new season.
Honey: As you know blueberries need bees to pollinate the plants and the farm has close to 50 of their own bee hives, located around the area. This has been a bumper year for the honey that these hives have produced and the farm has been selling this delicious, natural, unpasteurized treasure. The product should be available into September. If you are interested, call to reserve: 613-833-2069. (Click here to go to the Canaan Blueberry website.)

Organic Blueberries: Rubicon Farms is a Pick your Own Blueberry Farm just north of the village of Avonmore. They too are closed for the 2014 season. More...
Apples: Pine Hill Orchards, is a "pick your own" fruit farm (apples/grapes) located near Bourget. More...

The Canaan Blueberry Farm will be opening for the 2015 around mid-July. For safety reasons, when they do, the gates will be opened about one-half an hour earlier to get the line-up of vehicles off of Canaan Road and in to the parking area. Return visitors will know that traffic moves very quickly along Canaan Road, and for drivers approaching from the south, there is a blind spot coming up the hill, so visitors to the blueberry farm are asked to exercise caution when entering and leaving.

And remember... if you want to visit the farm you should always call ahead, just before you leave home because conditions (weather, fruit availability, etc) can change during the day. They do not usually answer the phone because they are busy in the fields, however the telephone calls are constantly monitored, and your messages are responded to ASAP... 613-833-2069.

If you want specific information, leave a message in a clear and slow voice.

To get directions check the Google map on their website.

TIPS:

  • Come early in the day and get a good parking spot in the shade.
  • If you arrive in the first hour or two, keep in mind that the fields may be slippery with the morning dew.
  • They provide two and four litre baskets for free. YOUR baskets are not allowed into the field.
  • Remove your sunglasses when picking as they may distort the colour of the berries (You don't want green berries.)
  • Canaan Road has fast moving traffic, take extra care entering or leaving the property.
  • Again, make sure you call ahead or check their website.

Honey has become a by-product of the blueberry farm
Delicious honey
A lesser known but equally important part of the operation is bee keeping. Blueberry plants, just like any other flowering vegetation, needs pollination and so over the years, the Reynolds have become local experts in the art of apiarism (bee keeping). They now have over 35 bee hives which not only look after theblueberry fields, but with bees flying up to a radius of 25 miles, the entire region benefits from their travels. Each hive can have up to 50 thousand bees, so with 35+ hives, you do the math.

The off shoot of pollination process, is that bees as you know, produce honey, and on a good year the Reynolds will take off hundreds of pounds of the golden treasure, which they prepare, package and sell on site. There are roughly three batches per year, spring, summer and fall, and each batch is distinctive in taste depending on what plants the bees forage from. (In the spring you may get clover, buckwheat and early flowering trees, in the summer and fall, various types of flowers, vegetables and shrubs.)
